MAYCO INTERNATIONAL, ADDS THERMOFORMING CAPABILITIES WITH THE INSTALLATION OF NEW SHUTTLE THERMOFORMER

STERLING HEIGHTS, MI – August 23, 2002 – Mayco International, LLC, announced the installation of a new two-station thermoforming system. The thermoformer, which was designed by Mayco engineers, has two parallel production lines, which feed coextruded plastic film past a shared oven station before being transferred to forming and trimming stations. The tandem production lines reduce cycle times, as well as increase output, over standard single-line thermoforming systems.

Thermoforming allows the creation of complex shapes made of plastic film rolls and sheets. Popular applications include front and rear fascia of automobiles, interior and exterior furniture, building materials, personal electronics, and reflective signage and apparel.

Mayco’s Shuttle Thermoformer is a highly automated collection of subsystems, including robotic loading stations; a common oven element for both production lines; twin platen forming stations can accommodate up to a 10’x12’ mold size with a 8,000 lb. (3637 kg.) load-lifting capacity; an integrated six-axis robotic trim system; and a sheet-feed system, which ensures repeatable registration to within .002" throughout the thermoforming process.

Of particular interest is the wide range of material and products that can be thermoformed. The load system can accommodate coextruded film in various sizes, thickness and colors. In addition, the oven station’s 60,000-watt heating capability is generated by 810 quartz tube-heating elements with 370 different zones for individual profiling when forming complex shapes and parts with deep draws.

"We now have an innovative thermoforming system to complement our film coextrusion facility," said Tim Hoefer, Mayco’s president. "Mayco can now manufacture coextruded thermoplastic film or sheet of any size, color or thickness – and then thermoform that film to precise customer specifications. This capability opens up new markets for Mayco in an expanding area in the plastics industry."
