Black Functional
Black functional parts have historically been thought of as "low tech" or "shoot and ship," type part that requires little manufacturing expertise. Traditionally, these components have been used to hide unsightly underbody and under hood conditions such as wheelhouse liners, air dams, battery trays, and close out panels. But as automotive designs become more complex, the issues of performance, cost and weight have come to the forefront of the automotive engineers agendas.Today, black functional plastic components have taken on new and varied roles for mass savings, sound abatement, accessibility, modular assembly and recycle ability. Thin wall black functional parts save mass on the vehicle. Recycled resins assist in the "green" environmental goals. Parts with sound absorbers have helped to achieve quieter interiors. An access panel opening on a black functional part allows for unique placement of other vehicle components for easy access when servicing. And underbody covers and air dams have helped mandate vehicle CAFE standards.
